I've been avoiding the backyard since the fire took my beautiful chickens.
It was a Saturday at 1:00 pm. I was taking a nap. My neighbor came pounding on my door, "there's smoke coming from your chicken coop!" By the time I got back there with the fire extinguisher, flames were shooting out of the shed. I knew instantly the chickens were gone, standing there in socks during a Minnesota January. I had to save my house. Windows were breaking on my back porch and flames were licking the siding. I opened the extinguisher, it was expired and acting like an accellerant. The firemen couldn't get the water going on one truck, thank god there was a backup. They put it out moments before the fire was going to jump to my house. Everything turned black.
Single worst day of my life.
I lost 5 chickens that I had raised since they were day old chicks. There names were Itchy, Scratchy, Ton Ton, Aniken and Aqua. And, although they cranked out the most beautiful assortment of eggs....they were my pets and I miss them everyday.
But, there's A New Hope. 2 new baby chicks, Wanda and Wayne. Chinese Silkie chickens, a hard to find breed that I've wanted for years. Impulse buy at the feed store.
I'm in my backyard again....
